Obon is a Japanese Buddhist festival that commemorates the dead. Today, participants dance to express their joy to be living happily and to honor loved ones who have passed away. Oban is known as festival of lanterns, where traditional lighting of chochin (lanterns) at family shrines and grave sites. Coal Miner Dance (Tanko Bushi) is also performed at this festival.
